She was one of the strongest leaders in the history of India.

Born on November 19, 1917 and was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru. She passed her Metric from Pune University and was then sent on to Shantiniketan, formed by Rabindranath Tagore. She received her college education at Somerville College, Oxford. She took politics after her fathers death in 1964. She was married to Feroze Gandhi in 1942 and bore two sons Rajiv and Sanjai.

Indira Gandhi became the first women Prime Minister to lead India in 1967. She created her own independent Congress party after she split with Indian National Congress on November 1969. Was re-elected as Prime Minister of India in 1971. She declared a State of Emergency in 1975 after the high court found her guilty of election fraud (1971 elections). Her authoritarian actions on the 19 months Emergency period led to her 1977 election debacle. However, three years later she was re-elected as Prime Minister of INDIA.

Under her rule,
India had a significant economic and industrial growth.
India had a decisive win over Pakistan in the third war over Kashmir in December 1971.
India carried out its first nuclear tests in 1974.
India became self sufficient in food grain production (Green Revolution).

On October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her two Sikh bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh.

Indhira Priyadarshini Gandhi was noted as the "Iron Lady of INDIA".

Family: Father - Jawaharlal Nehru, Mother - Kamala Nehru, Husband - Feroze Gandhi, Sons - Sanjai and Rajiv.
